File formats

We operate both Apple Macs (MacOS X 10.3) and Windows PCs (XP Pro) with a variety of software packages on each platform.

While we can print from a number of applications, you are advised to supply a PDF (Acrobat) file to minimise the chance of any problems for example with fonts, and also, in particular, Word documents changing which is a common problem. If you use MacxOS X, you can make a PDF via the print command. If you use Windows, then you will need software to create a PDF; a free PDF creator is available called PrimoPDF. N.B. u-print.com provide a link to PrimoPDF for the benefit of our customers however we cannot offer any assistance in using this software, nor can we be held responsible for any problems that arise with downloading, installing and using PrimoPDF. In our testing, it appears to be OK.

The programs available are shown below. Note that programs in grey are not available on the customer PCs and can be used only by u-print.com staff, likewise the Macs.

Windows programs

  • Microsoft Office XP/2002 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Office 2003 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 8
  • Microsoft Publisher XP/2002

Macintosh programs

  • Macromedia FreeHand MX
  • Adobe PhotoShop 7
  • Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2
  • Adobe PageMaker 7
  • Microsoft Office 2004 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (v.4-7)

Graphics Files

Graphics can be supplied in a variety of formats. If you are using a vector drawing package then for best results, we recommend an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) with Macintosh preview. If you cannot make an EPS with Mac preview, then save it as PDF version 1.3 using PrimoPDF (see above) and we can convert this to EPS.

If you are using a bitmap drawing program then there are many different formats that are acceptable. These include TIFF, Photoshop, Windows Bitmap, GIF, and JPEG. If you use Photoshop format, please flatten the image to reduce the chance of problems with missing fonts. We would not recommend JPEG as it is a lossy format but if this is all you can produce, save it at the highest possible quality for best results.

Vector EPS files do not have a fixed resolution so can normally be scaled up without any loss in quality. For all other formats, please ensure that the graphics you supply (especially those that include text) are at least 300 dots or pixels per inch (600dpi recommended) at the actual size of the final image. The effective resolution decreases as images are scaled up; for example, if you send us an A6 image at 300dpi to be printed at A4 size, the resolution halves to 150dpi resulting in text that looks more blocky and rough. Furthermore, if the image being scaled up is a JPEG, the quality is even worse as the effects of the lossy compression become more visible.

Please, if at all possible do not send us graphics inserted into a Word or other document. Always send the separate graphics file, if you have it.
