Here are answers to some of the questions we are often asked. If you have a question about any aspect of our business, please Email us.
Do you offer a student discount?
No, most of our customers are students so everyone pays the same, low price.
Can anyone use your services?
Yes, although the bulk of our work comes from the university sector, we do accept work from businesses and the general public. At certain busy times of the year, student work (printing & binding of disserations etc.) will take priority over all other work. Two notable busy periods are the 3-4 weeks after the Easter vacation (April/May) and the first 2 weeks of September, but there may be many other isolated busy spells throughout the year.
Do you collect and deliver?
No, sorry. With most of our work coming from the campus, it is not feasible for us to offer such a service.
Are you open during the university vacations?
Yes, for most of the time. We are closed on all Bank Holidays, for 2 weeks over Christmas & New Year, and for 11 days at the end of July/beginning of August. There may be some minor alterations to our opening times too. Please see our home page for full details.
Are you open on weekends?
No, sorry only Monday to Friday.
What is the largest size poster you can print?
A3 which is 420 x 297 mm (16.5" x 11.7" approximately). This means that we cannot print posters in A2, A1 or A0 sizes, so please do not ask. You can print large format posters at the following locations:
- University of Manchester: IT Services, Kilburn Building, Tel internal 56017, off campus (0161) 275 6017.
- University of Manchester: PhotoGraphics Unit, Stopford Building, Tel internal 55258, off campus (0161) 275 5258.
- Manchester Metropolitan University: Faculty of Art & Design Print Bureau, Tel (0161) 247 1925.
- University of Salford: T Walker & Co, University House (Students' Union), Tel (0161) 295 5216.
The details listed above are for information only. Other commercial outlets are available.
Do you laminate posters?
Only up to A3. To laminate posters larger than this size, please contact The Plastic Art Company on Temperance Street (off Fairfield Street), telephone (0161) 273 3766.
Do you do spiral binding?
Technically no. We do offer comb binding (plastic rings) and wire binding (metal rings) but neither of these are spiral binding.
Do you do Perfect/Heat/Thermal/Tape binding?
No.
Will you be busy on such-a-date and time?
Maybe! If you have a deadline then you can be certain that other students on your course will have the same deadline too. If they all come to us at the same time then yes, we probably will be busy but this does not mean that we won't be able to do your work. Just try not to leave it to the last minute...
How long does binding take?
Softback - Channel binding is the quickest, wire binding is the slowest, but all should be done in just a few minutes. Hardback - allow 2-3 days.
Is the paper you use of archive quality?
The Xerox Recycled Supreme conforms to the ISO 9706 Permanent Paper standard.
How long have you been open?
The business originally opened in April 1988. The current staff have over 40 years combined experience working here.
Why do you charge more than the University do for printing?
Both our black-only and colour printing is charged on a sliding scale: the more you have the cheaper it is per copy, so for longer runs we charge significantly less than the University. We also don't charge for help & advice and setting up print jobs like other companies do. You will find that the charges for our other services are hard to beat and we publish all our pricelists for everyone to see. If you do find somewhere in Manchester with a standard price that is lower than ours, let us know and we'll see what we can do about it. Also note that the staff are paid directly out of u-print.com's income with no subsidy and that any profit made is returned to the Students' Union for the benefit of all students at the University.
Can you print right up to the edge of a sheet of paper?
Sorry, we cannot print full bleed. Our printers produce a white border of approx. 5mm
Where's the Harwood Room?
It's on the first floor (C floor) of the Barnes Wallis Building. Rather than entering via the Students' Union on the lower level (B floor), you are advised to enter using the footbridge located near the railway viaduct arches (on the upper level of the campus); look for the bright red magnet sculpture.
Have you got any empty boxes?
We always try to re-use whatever boxes and packaging we have. However, there are times when we have an excess and these will be available for collection from next to our storeroom door, opposite the Barclays cash machine.
